For almost two years I have gotten away from the one thing I was addicted to for close to nine years which was posting to Twitter. When Twitter launched and I got an account back in 2008, I was almost fascinated by the site and was impressed with having meaningful conversations with almost anybody in the world and meeting new and interesting people.

However, that Twitter which I loved back in 2008-10 is a thing of the past and the Twitter that exists now is a gigantic fucking cesspool of racism, trolling, cyber bullying and ads from brands trying to get you to buy their latest worthless crap.

Seeing it slowly decay while the Jack Dorsey's and Biz Stone's and Dick Costolo's of the world let the site turn into a breeding ground for hate to the point where their platform brought about the hell we are currently facing in this country has been very anger inducing. It's pathetic that these idiots couldn't care less about trying to help others all because they're whores for the almighty dollar in order to get their profits in the next financial quarter up.

I left Twitter in Early 2017 because at that point I feared if I remained on the site, I would slowly lose my mind to the point of depression and probably suicide. It slowly stopped being fun and if I was going to remain on a platform that surrended to racism and hate to line Jack's next trip to some country that abuses human rights so he can meditate and ignore it like the coward he is, then I figured let it rot and leave.

And in all honesty while I still maintain a burner account for business purposes and use accounts for my summer work, I rarely post and don't let it consume my day like before. I feel like my mental health has become a lot better in the last two years because of it.

While I still maintain accounts on Facebook and Instagram, I've been giving Mastodon which is essentially a decentralized version of Twitter without the ads my attention. It's a fine platform however I will be honest, I feel frustrated that the platform will probably never get past being a niche. Some may find that a good thing but I don't, I feel that it is important that Twitter and Facebook have competitors in the marketplace and if we don't allow ourselves to demand accountablity of these platforms to have a degree of concern for their users what we saw with disinformation campaigns back in 2016 will continue into next year's Presidential Election in the U.S.

It's kind of another reason why I started posting on Dreamwidth despite not regularly blogging in years because of Livejournal's decline and their current owners (FU Putin BTW), I miss this old form of social media. The microblogging of Twitter just made me feel like I lost my longform way of thinking which you don't get by being limited to 140 or 280 or whatever amount of characters Twitter has now for posts.

I couldn't care less if my posts don't get ratioed or if nobody reads my toots on Mastodon or whatever, that's not why I'm on social media, I'm here to interact and even if one person reads what I have to say and actually has some substance to add or give some constructive criticism and we can talk about it like adults then I consider it "Mission Accomplished".
